- How do you pronounce "Laughton"? - So glad you asked. It's pronounced LAW-ton. "Lawton." - So is it just you, working alone? - Usually it is, although sometimes it makes sense to team up with another contractor. Also it's not unusual to work with the client's staff. Certainly there'll be some sort of line of communication there, and that can include extensive collaboration. - Can you elaborate on the headings on your card, "Repairs, Modifications, Design"? - "Modifications" is the one that's maybe hardest for people to imagine, so check out the examples here, here and here. (A few examples will only scratch the surface, of course.) "Design" is another extremely wide-ranging category, but check out this and this. - What's the most impressive work featured on your site? - Well, all this stuff was impressive from the clients' point of view. Results are results. The client is just glad to know they have someone they can call. That said, what fascinates me most on this site is the gnarly computer work -- right down at the lowest level, where a machine's Instruction Set meets the gates that implement it. - What's your geographical area of operation? - There's no real limit, but I live in Stratford and I work mostly in south-western Ontario: London and Kitchener-Waterloo region... and Toronto, of course, and even Montreal. And on various occasions I've shipped stuff I built to Quebec and the US. - How do you bill? - Sometimes there's an established fee for a job, with details researched and a quotation provided in advance. Otherwise, billing is based on time. For on-site service the hourly charge is comparable to the going rate for automobile service (at Canadian Tire for example). In other cases a lower rate might apply, especially for jobs I can complete on my own schedule and on my own premises. - Are these real questions that people asked, or did I wri, uh, did you write all these FAQ's yourself? - uh, um... !! |
